Current research

CBT treatment for people with PTSD and SMI

People with severe mental illness (SMI) commonly cope with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) as a result of exposure to traumatic events. The interaction and mutual influences of mental illness and trauma symptoms, lead to a wide range of outcomes, including a worsening of the symptoms and increased use of mental health services. CBT for PTSD and SMI (CBT 4s) therapy, specifically designed for people with severe mental illness and PTSD, was found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of both post-trauma and mental illness. Hila's current research aims to examine the efficacy of CBT for PTSD and SMI (CBT 4s) for people with SMI and PTSD. The current study's hypothesis is that, compared to treatment as usual (TAU), the CBT 4s treatment will be more effective in reducing both the participants' PTSD and the symptoms associated with the SMI. The current study also hypothesizes that the effectiveness of the treatment will be due to the contribution of the mediating variables of cognitions about the trauma and its consequences, emotional regulation, ruminations, sense of control and finding meaning.
