Willingness of Elderly Persons with Hearing Impairment to Purchase Hearing Aids: Examining a Model integrating the Expanded Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Self stigma.

Age-related hearing loss (Presbycusis) is the third most common chronic condition reported in elderly people. Untreated hearing loss can have multiple negative effects, including reduced quality of life and diminished physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral and social functioning. Hearing aids are an effective rehabilitation intervention, and yet only a small percentage of affected people (10-20%) who could benefit from the use of hearing aids actually wear them. Stigma is a major factor inhibiting people from seeking help and treatment for hearing impairment. In the present study I will examine and define the concept of stigma within the framework of hearing loss. My second aim is to assess the contribution of this concept to a comprehensive examination of the willingness of adults persons with hearing impairment to purchase hearing aids. To this end, the research will examine the applicability of an integrative theoretical model that combines two theories: a) the self stigma theory according to Corrigan`s psychological cognitive attribution model; and b) the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).
