Background

Professor and Dean of School of Social Work, at the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences at the University of Haifa and Research Director, Eating Disorders Institution, Psychiatric Division, Rambam, Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel.

Prof. Yael Latzer, graduated from University of Haifa with both BA & MA in Clinical Social Work. Her Doctor of Medical Science (DSc.) was obtained at the Technion Medical School, in Haifa, Israel. She received additional certification in Psychotherapy, Family and Couples Therapy, and Inter-Personal Psychotherapy. She held a two-year fellowship position, training in the treatment of eating disorders (EDs), at the Psychoanalytic Institute, Menninger Foundation, in Topeka, Kansas, USA, (1989-1991).

Academically, full professor and dean of School of Social Work, at the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences, University of Haifa, affiliated also with School of Public Health. In the school of public health, Prof. Latzer developed and led (for 5 years) an MA Nutrition program, with an emphasis on behavioral and psychological related factors. Prof. Latzer has published more than a hundred peer-reviewed articles in scientific and clinical journals, as well as 46 in scientific book chapters. She edited five books, four of them on eating disorders.  During her sabbaticals in NY, USA, she was a visiting professor at Yeshiva University, Ferkhauf Graduate School of Psychology, and at the Nutrition and Behavior and psychology departments of Columbia University.

Clinically, Prof. Latzer was the founder and director of the EDs Institution, in the Psychiatric Division in Rambam, Health Care Campus, Haifa for 25 years. The Institution’s treatment model is based on a multidisciplinary framework for treating EDs and focuses mainly on family therapy. Based on this model, she developed a 2-year training program for multidisciplinary experienced clinicians. The EDs Institution in Rambam is one of the largest in Israel, serving as a model for other ED centers.

Social activities: Prof. Latzer is among the founders of the Israeli Association for EDs, served as its president for 5 years. She has been a member of the organizing and scientific committees for more than 12 Israeli EDs international and national conferences, active in the American Academy of EDs, its international task force and serve as the Israeli chair of the its European chapter, and member of the EDs Research Society. She was invited to be Guest editor in 5 scientific journals on the topic of EDs, and serve on an editorial bord in others.

Prof Latzer developed and established an innovative project, (2008), rehabilitation house for young women with sever EDs. (“Zeida Laderech”), and received a prestigious prize from “the Leonore & Larry Zusman – JDC” for excellence in the field of Social Services in Israel, and from the national mental health rehabilitation association, in acknowledgement of her contribution to the research, prevention and treatment of EDs both nationally and internationally. Recently she with her colleagues established special information center for EDs sufferers and their families.

Additionally, over the last 2 decade she has been active as an advisor to the Israeli Parliament (“Knesset”) and have contributed dramatically to the change in treatment policy in EDs. From 2010- 2012 she served as an advisor to the former Knesset Member Dr. Rachel Adatto, who was working to pass a new Bill through the Israeli parliament. She was part of the process from the outset, providing both evidence-based data and clinical input to Members of Parliament. The new legislation prohibits the appearance of underweight models (BMI of 18.5 or lower) in commercial advertising. This Bill has the potential to make a difference for public health, mainly for female adolescents trapped by the unrealistic thin body ideal of models. The Bill was proven to be of international significance. Prof. Yael Latzer is known both locally and throughout the world, as an expert in the field of EDs, treatment and research.

Her main research areas are:

  1. Eating and sleeping disorders and night eating syndrome
  2. Psychopathology and family in EDs
  3. Identifying at-risk groups and prevention of EDs in Israeli adolescents’ subgroups.
  4. Religiosity spirituality and EDs.
