Post-Traumatic Growth in People with Comorbid Serious Mental Illness and Posttraumatic symptomatology

Despite the adverse consequences of Severe Mental Illness (SMI), some people may succeed in recovering and even growing from the traumatic experiences in their struggle with the illness. Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) can develop through emotional and cognitive processes as well as through behaviors, and influence the way people perceive themselves and the world as well as their relationships with others. Although growth processes were described in people with SMI, PTG has yet to be assessed in this population within an operationalized empirical and coherent model in order to understand growth. In the present study I explore three possible models in an attempt to conceptualize and examine issues of PTG development in people with SMI and post traumatic symptomatology.
