Current Research

Investigating the Underlying Mechanism of the Posttraumatic-Stress-Reaction Following Motor Vehicle Accidents: A Study Using Experience Sampling

Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are considered among the most persistent and common source of traumatic stress and may result in a wide range of psychological responses, both immediately as well as months and years after the event.  These responses may cause much emotional burden to the victim, delaying his or hers rehabilitation and recovery. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to examine what might be the mechanisms underlying vulnerability to posttraumatic stress reactions. Accumulating evidence suggests that activation of such symptoms may be triggered by a causal system of dynamic, daily-life experiences that reinforces their continuance, and thereby their exacerbation, over time. Thus, the present study wishes to examine how predisposition to individual vulnerability may increase the risk of developing posttraumatic stress symptoms, through revealing its mechanisms as they play out in real-life experiences. The findings are expected to yield theoretical as well as clinical useful knowledge.
