Current Research

Willingness of family caregivers of elderly persons with dementia to undertake advanced care planning for themselves: Examining an expanded model of the theory of planned behavior.

Advance Care Planning (ACP) is the process by which a person defines in advance his/her preferences regarding health care treatments that he or she requests or refuses to receive at end-of-life. In the intermediate and advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, people are limited in their cognitive and physical functioning and cannot make decisions for themselves. Therefore, their family caregivers must cope with making health care decisions for them, besides providing ongoing care for the person with dementia. Given the experience of family caregivers in making health care decisions for their relatives with dementia, the question arises whether they would be willing to undertake Advance Care Planning for themselves—and if so, which factors affect their willingness? The purpose of the study is to examine this question using an expanded model of the Theory of Planned Behavior.
