Identity Crisis: Individual and collective identity transitions in a response to significant loss experienced by a team member

 תקציר עבודת הדוקטורט:

In this research we will explore the identity threats, transitions and reconstruction that employees experience following long term sick absence of a team member, due to injury, chronic illness and cases of loss of an immediate family member. we suggest that in the presence of severe loss or trauma as described, there are significant changes not just for the employee himself, but also his or her close organizational environment. We shall present how loss and grief triggers an interruption to the existing identity of coworkers and supervisors, creating the need for development of a new sense of self.

This study is expected to contribute to the identity literature by exploring how identities are formed in a relational manner, while reacting to the others’ experience, particularly in times of crisis and will enable a novel understanding into the crafting of identities at such times.  From the practical perspective, the results may constitute a basis for the development of managerial and team-development processes designed to improve constructive identity transitions, as well as to better understand the process work-teams and leaders go through, and ways in which to improve the coping, resilience and effectiveness of the team in such challenging times.
