Background
Hanan received her B.A. in Sociology and Education from the University of Haifa in 2009, and her M.A. in Gerontology from the same university in 2014. In 2015, she got an excellence scholarship during the first year of her PhD.
Current research
The relation betweencaregiving burden and stigma by association among primary caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the Arab community in Israel.
Stigma by association is defined as a stigma experienced by individuals because of their close association with a person with stigma such as informal caregivers- spouses and adult children- of person with AD. Recent studies show that stigma by association among caregivers of AD is associated with considerable negative consequences:caregiver stress, social isolation, decreased help seeking and increased caregiver burden. Additionally, the caregivers of persons with AD pertaining to ethnic minorities report more stigmatizing views about the disease mostly because of cultural beliefs. The aim of this study is to examine the relation between caregiving burden and stigma by association among Israeli Arab family caregivers of a person with AD. The study includes two stages: a qualitative assessment with focus groups and quantitative assessment using a structured questionnaire.
